Job Opening: Communications & Digital Media Coordinator
DTM is seeking a Communications and Digital Media Coordinator to play a critical role in utilizing online tools and platforms to effectively communicate DTM’s broad breadth of science.
The ideal applicant must have a strong communications strategy and messaging skills, as well as an eye for design and eagerness to take on new tasks. The position requires writing, designing, and managing content for the DTM website, the monthly e-newsletter, and the department’s various social media accounts. Experience in science writing a plus, but not required.
The Communications and Digital Media Coordinator will be working alongside world-renowned scientists doing extraordinary research translating their publications, discoveries, and experiences to the web using the appropriate type of digital communication applications in order to make their life’s work accessible to various audiences, both academic and general, in the most creative way possible. The successful candidate should excel in an evolving digital landscape to ensure DTM stays at the forefront of online science communication.
DTM is a non-profit, scientific research organization located in Northwest, Washington, DC. Scientists at DTM bring the perspective of several disciplines to answer broad questions. DTM’s name comes from its original role to chart the Earth’s magnetic field, which was largely accomplished by 1929. DTM has since evolved to reflect the growing multi-disciplinary nature of the Earth, planetary, and astronomical sciences. Today, the historic goal has broadened to understand not only the physical Earth, but our solar system and beyond.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design, write, and produce monthly e-newsletter via MailChimp for DTM
- Run DTM’s Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube social media accounts
- Maintain and update content on DTM’s website
- Work with our scientists to write editorial content for the website
- Design websites and collateral for research projects, proposals, events. etc.
- Track and report engagement metrics for DTM’s digital communications
- Provide social media coverage of campus events and conferences
- Help plan and manage campus-wide events
- Learn new digital tools, implement them in your work, and onboard fellow employees
- A degree in communications, journalism, media relations, or equivalent experience required
- Compelling storyteller with strong written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, MailChimp, G Suite, and CMS platforms such as Drupal, WordPress, and Squarespace
- Fluency in copyediting and AP style guidelines
- Ability to work well under pressure, as well as manage multiple priorities and projects effectively
- Excellent attention to detail and upholding visual and verbal identity
- Good research and analytical skills
- Experience running email campaigns and newsletters
- Be a successful team player, and also highly driven and capable of working alone
- Commitment to remain at the forefront of online communication advancements
- Experience encouraged, but not required: HTML, CSS, UX/UE design skills, science writing, and/or event management
