Overview

Oxidation of Earth's Crust Through Deep Time
Progressive oxidation of copper in minerals following the rise of atmospheric oxygen

Olivier Gagné is a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow working on elucidating the compositional and structural aspects underpinning the functional properties of inorganic materials. He uses large data resources to facilitate identification, quantification and particularly, prediction of anomalous bonding behavior in inorganic solids. Gagné further strives to improve the accuracy of inferring the oxidation state of redox-active cations for the thriving class of chalcogenide materials (compounds with S2-, Se2- and/or Te2- as the main anion), which he uses as a proxy to study the Earth's changing near-surface conditions through geological time.
